What is best area of Atlanta?

Q: I am 22 years old, graduating from university soon, and plan to move with my mom to the Atlanta area. She is going through a divorce, and I would like to be there for her for a semester or two. Anyway, we have family in Georgia and my mom has always loved Georgia. She wants to moth to either Atlanta or Columbus. I would prefer Atlanta since I am young and its a big city, and for the same reason she is hesitant. What would be a great area for someone like me (22 year poly sci graduate) and my mom (47 year old teacher, recently divorced) She wants calm and small, I want busy and fun. Obviously, we wont find both, and I'm definatly willing to compromise for her. I heard Buckhead is great, but I dont know if that would be great for my mom... Anyway, please anyones advice would be very helpful for me to start looking into the area. We may go there next weekend for a job fair for my mom to attend, so I can check out the areas then...

A: I live in Atlanta and would recommend the Virginia-Highland area, Midtown/Buckhead, Druid Hills, or Brookhaven. These are all places that are "inside the perimeter" (which is a term you will hear a lot if you move here. Inside the perimeter (ITP) refers to the area insde the I-285 loop. Typically, ITP living is much more expensive that "outside the perimeter" (OTP) living. Don't get me wrong, the places I've mentioned are not cheap. Typically a one bedroom apartment there will run upwards of $950-$1000 a month. If you can't afford that, you may be able to find something in the Dunwoody area (north of the city just outside the perimter) for less expensive (still a fun and decent area). The higher crime areas of Atlanta are typically in the southern part of the city. By the way, your Mom would probably love the Brookhaven area. And it is only 10 minutes from Buckhead, Midtown, and Va.-Highlands. Hope this helps!!
