Q: I have been laid off since August 2007 and I have applied to over 200 or more jobs. I have had interviews and it is clear to me that there is problem here. I have a ton of experience but no degree. I think that is weird that an employer does not hire me because I have too much experience, especially when I am willing to take an entry level salary. Maybe it is the color of my skin, which I thought would not be a problem in Atlanta, GA. Maybe its my New York ambition, alot of southerns are very laid back and I think they feel threatened. Its very hard for me, Christmas is around the corner and unfortunately it does not feel like Christmas this year. I don't want to leave Atlanta, I love the weather.
A: Atlanta used to be hopping with jobs before Mayor Franklin took office. After she put the city on a hiring freeze, private companies did the same and the job market came to a screeching halt. Now, a lot of companies are putting jobs out on the market just to stockpile resumes and take their time about hiring someone. Your skin color isn't a major issue, but being from the North myself, I have noticed with some employers that if your phone voice doesn't match your skin tone, they have a surprised look on their face when you enter their office. Don't lose hope! A good path to take is to hit a lot of the temporary services that specialize in your field. That way you can get your foot in the door at some of the major companies and possibly get hired permanently. Plus, they don't care about degrees, just your work experience and your ability to be at the job on time. Good Luck!
