Q: I live in the Midwest. I work in a warehouse driving fork trucks, cherry pickers and deep reaches. I make $14.30 an hour. Plus I get a lot of overtime. (I made close to $40K last year). My sister wants me to move out to the Sacramento area. I looked on the internet. I can't seem to find a job that will pay enough for it to be worth it for me to move out there. Especially with the cost of living. Rent will be twice as much in Sacramento as it is here. Any advice?
A: Unfortunately Sacramento is one of the hardest hit areas with the mortgage meltdown which I imagine will impact the local job market as demand overall will be down as people leave their houses - or have to tend to other costs. Additionally, the #1 employer in Sacramento is the government and recently the governor has implemented a hiring freeze which will prevent stateworker hiring but it will also impact the local non-government jobs. With that said I imagine rent may shift. There are definitely some expensive places to rent in the area - but if you know which areas to look in the outskirts of Sacramento you can find places that aren't as expensive. There are some great things in the area - there are industrial areas that are heavy in warehouses like Rancho Cordova. Check out sacbee.com to see local job postings for Sacramento jobs.
