Q: Can you join the Union/ IBEW as an electrician helper? Or do you have to be licensed?? I do plan on being an apprentice very soon but you gotta crawl befor you walk....
A: You can get your apprentice license from the TDLR - it costs $20.00 and you can get it online from them after you fill out a form - and yes you should be able to join the IBEW once you have it. If you sign on with most elcectrical contractors, they usually will help you get your license as part of your employement package and help you to take classes while your employeed by them. The training program runs for four years and you should be able to take and pass the exam for Jouneryman Electrician afterwards; depending on how well you did in the classes that is. You can find out more at the website used by TDLR.
