Q: I want to get into this industry but I am clueless when it comes to obtaining the required information I need to get started.
A: Whoa.... good luck... This is a job that you either are lucky to get due to a family member or just plain good timing. I would start down at the docks doing anything they want and working yourself up to this. We use to tie up our company tugs ourselves in Hawaii and the longshoremen came down heavy on us. We were non union .. We eventually let them do it... Why? They would put their babies on the tires of the docks so we couldn't tie up or they would hinder us in other ways. Start with getting in the union.. Then take it from there. Someday if you are lucky and are well liked or do great work you may get a job with them..
