anyone know of a sewing class in San Diego?

Q: i'm in high schol and really want to learn how to sew...but all the places i find are for adults only

A: Unless they're highly unusual sewing schools, I'm pretty sure any sewing class would welcome a motivated and interested high school student. Try local fabric stores, local sewing machine shops, community colleges and "adult ed" programs. Community college classes are often open to high school students either on a non-credit basis or with a letter from your principal. Adult ed classes are usually open to anyone who can behave in class. If you're totally out of luck, call Rosie's Calico Shop and ask if they have suggestions. I'm In Oregon, but every time I've stopped into Rosie's, the staff has been knowledgeable and helpful. They're a quilt shop, but they may have a very beginner quilting class that will get you through basic machine operation and fabric handling. Learning to do basic patchwork piecing is an excellent foundation for garment construction classes. The precision you learn in quilting can carry through to garments. Another possibility would be to teach yourself, though that's a more frustrating path than having someone around you can immediately ask questions of. I have my students work through Connie Crawford's new Studio Sewing Skills dvd -- she's a retired FIDM sewing, patternmaking and draping teacher: http://www.butterick.com/list/connie_crawford/page-3.htm This is based on ready-to-wear type sewing methods, and it's the way I wished I had learned to sew, instead of traditional home sewing methods. Quality is higher and the sewing less frustrating, imo.
