A: I suggest you talk to people in your area and ask for referrals. When you find a guy or guys you like, ask them for references and call their references. Also check with your state board that regulates contractors on the status of their license. I've managed to avoid some really crappy contractors this way - by checking with the state board for complaints against them. Anybody can have one lousy customer who complains, but if there is more than one complaint, I avoid them.
